Dallas Mavericks guard Trey Burke practices with the team for the first time

The Dallas Mavericks had the opportunity to replace Willie Cauley-Stein after he opted out. They decided Trey Burke was the best player available. Burke is familiar with the Mavs. He came over from New York in Kristaps Porzingis trade last season. Burke played 25 games with Dallas to close out the year.

The 27-year-old guard did not travel to Orlando with the team. He did not arrive at Disney World until July 22. Burke had to quarantine before he could join the Mavericks on the court.

That passed and Friday was his first day with the team. Let us take a closer look plus a few quotes on his first workout.

Burke was spotted back on the court on Friday. The Mavericks posted a photo on their official Twitter account to let fans know.

The 27-year-old will be competing with J.J. Barea for backup point guard minutes. The two could also share the court as Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle goes with three guard lineups. Burke is a scoring guard off the bench that will be important for Dallas in the playoffs. Fans can read more about his impact here.

Carlisle had this to say about Burke’s first practice.

"“He is doing very well. He did not practice with us in the live portion of practice, but we did a lot of run-through of our stuff with him. He picked it up very quickly. He and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist did some conditioning stuff on the side with Jeremy Holsopple while practice was going on.”"

Coach Carlisle also noted that the Mavs have everybody in Orlando now.

Fans can hear Burke talk about what caused his delay in arriving for the restart.

Burke sounds ready to get back on the court and make an impact with the Mavericks. The veteran point guard should be a steady hand for the team in the restart.
