Dallas Mavericks show off some of the best plays from J.J. Barea

The Dallas Mavericks were not sure what they were going to get from J.J. Barea at the start of the season. He was coming off Achilles surgery. The veteran point guard had to prove he could still play in the NBA.

Barea did just that. He took on a new role this season. Coach Rick Carlisle did not have him in the nightly rotation. J.J. became Dallas’ game-changer. Whenever the Mavs needed a spark, Carlisle called Barea off the bench. He often delivered. J.J. averages 7.5 points and 3.8 assists in 15.0 minutes per game this season.

Barea celebrated his 36th birthday on Friday. The Mavericks honored him in a number of ways. Let us take a closer look at one of them.

Mavs fans know that Barea is one of the best pick and roll ball handlers in the NBA. He is still carving up defenses whenever called upon.

It will be interesting to see if he takes on a larger role during the season’s restart in Orlando. Jalen Brunson is out for the year after having shoulder surgery. That opens up the backup point guard spot. Barea will be battling it out with Delon Wright and Trey Burke during training camp 2.0.

Coach Carlisle could choose to play the matchups. Giving the nod to Wright when the Mavs need defense. Barea and Burke are both offense-first players. That may be the true battle in Orlando. Expect Barea to play more minutes than he did before the suspension.
