Dallas Mavericks legend J.J. Barea celebrates his 36th birthday

The Dallas Mavericks signed undrafted free agent J.J. Barea in 2006. Nobody expected him to play 14 seasons in the NBA or help the Mavericks win a championship, but Barea did just that. He transformed himself into one of the best backup point guards and an unstoppable pick and roll ball handler.

Barea has given Mavs fans so many memorable moments too. Topping the list is likely his 2011 playoff run. He came up with aces often including in the final two games to close out the Heat and bring the championship back to Dallas.

Barea coming back this season after tearing his Achilles has been a feel-good story. Sure, his playing time may have decreased, but nobody wanted to see the Mavericks legend end his career with a devastating injury.

To celebrate Barea’s birthday, the Mavericks posted this on Friday morning.

Luka Doncic and Boban Marjanovic also posted birthday wishes to Barea on their Instagram stories. Here is to wishing the legend the best on his special day. Hopefully, it is an outstanding year for the Mavericks guard.

Barea could see an expanded role during the NBA’s restart in Orlando. Jalen Brunson had shoulder surgery that will keep him out. The Mavs will be looking for someone to step up and fill his backup point guard role. Barea figures to be the leader. The Mavericks did just sign Trey Burke to compete with Barea during training camp 2.0.

The 36-year-old is a free agent after the season. It will be interesting to see if Barea decides to play another season or not. The Mavericks would love to have him back on the roster. He could be used in a change of pace role similar to the one he played during the Mavs 67 games before the suspension. It will all come down to Barea’s desire to return. Stay tuned for more.
