Dallas Mavericks to open practice facility on May 28

The Dallas Mavericks have not played a game since March 11. That night the NBA suspended the season because of the novel coronavirus. The players have not even had a practice since that night.

Things may be changing, though. The momentum appears to be shifting towards a return featuring a “campus” environment in Orlando in July. Details are not locked in at this point. The NBA may only bring back the playoff teams. It appears less likely by the day that all 30 teams will be playing in Orlando. Fans can read the latest news here.

The Mavericks will be part of the return. They currently sit seventh in the Western Conference and are guaranteed a spot. News broke on Wednesday that makes it appear the NBA is one step closer to returning.

Dallas Mavericks opening practice facility on Thursday

The Mavs announced that players could begin voluntary workouts at the team’s practice facility on May 28.

There are only a handful of teams that have not opened back up yet. Owner Mark Cuban wanted to make sure it was safe and proper protocols were being taken before opening the facility. The fact that the Mavericks are allowing workouts to happen likely means the boss has some assurance that games will be played in short order.

Marc Stein also reported this on Wednesday.

That is important for the Mavericks because both Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis returned to their home countries during the NBA’s suspension. No word yet on when they will be brought back, but they have the clearance to do so.

Mavs fans should be excited. Basketball appears likely to return this summer. That means they will get their shot in the playoffs. It will not be a traditional postseason, but the experience will be important for the young Mavericks. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
