Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s plan for NBA return

Dallas Mavericks players are excited to get back on the basketball court. They have not even had a practice since the NBA suspended the season on March 11 because of the novel coronavirus. Players are itching to get on the hardwood.

The league is trying to formulate its plan to bring games back. Their goal is safety first. It appears Orlando has emerged as the location for return. There are still plenty of questions. Here is a look at the latest from the long Memorial Day weekend.

Will all 30 teams be in action? Damian Lillard let it be known that he will not play if the Trail Blazers cannot make the playoffs. How does the league deal with that? Just put the 16 playoff teams in Orlando?

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s plan for NBA restart

Mark Cuban always has an idea. He shared this one with ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on Tuesday. Read the entire article here.

Under Cuban’s plan, all 30 teams would play in Orlando. Each organization would play five to seven regular season games. Then, ten teams per conference could qualify for the playoffs. His postseason would not include conference affiliations, though. The field would be reseeded one through 20 by final regular season record.

The final two traditional playoff positions would be decided by either a single game or best of three series. Then, the postseason would begin as normal with seven-game series.

Why Cuban wants this plan?

It gives every team a chance to make the playoffs making their games meaningful. The Warriors and Timberwolves would be the only teams that could not qualify for the postseason. The regular season games are also important for financial reasons.

It is an exciting idea that gives every fan base reasons to tune in. That has to be the league’s goal with no fans in attendance all the revenue will come from television money.

The Mavericks would have a chance to move up from seventh in the Western Conference. There are just 2.5 games behind the Utah Jazz for fourth making every regular season game significant.

There is no guarantee the league goes through with Cuban’s plan. It is just one of many being discussed. The NBA will be making its decision in the coming days, so fans will not have to wait much longer to know the specifics. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
