Dallas Mavericks big man Maxi Kleber interviews Satou Sabally

The Dallas Mavericks have quite the German connection. In started with drafting Detlef Schrempf and Uwe Blab in 1985. Then, Dirk Nowitzki came over in 1998. The Mavs have employed fellow German big men Shawn Bradley and Chris Kaman. Maxi Kleber is the Mavs’ current German.

According to Real GM, there have only been 23 German players in the history of the NBA. At some point in their careers, the Mavericks have had six of them on their roster. They know how to find talent in Germany.

The Dallas Wings decided to use that blueprint. They selected Satou Sabally with the second overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. She is coming off a fantastic season at the University of Oregon. Sabally averaged 16.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 51.3 percent from the field.

Sabally has been getting plenty of love since being drafted by the Wings. Dirk Nowitzki even sent her a welcome to Dallas message on the night of the draft.

Since moving to Dallas in 2016, the Wings have been under .500 every season. Hopefully, Sabally can lead the charge in putting an end to that. She is a special talent that should have Dallas fans excited about the future.

Supporters can expect Maxi Kleber to be an important part of the Dallas Mavericks rotation when the season resumes. His minutes will be key if they are going to make a playoff run. Kleber’s abilities to protect the rim, defend on the perimeter, and space the floor are unique. That could pay dividends in the playoffs when the defense ratchets up. Stay tuned.
