Why it won’t happen

The Dallas Mavericks are limited in terms of draft picks they could offer the Utah Jazz. They owe the Knicks their 2021 and 2023 first rounders from the Kristaps Porzingis trade. The Stepien Rule permits the Mavs from trading a first round selection until 2025. That is a long time to wait for any team.

They could trade their 2020 first rounder on draft night. The Mavericks also hold the Warriors second round selection which currently sits at 31 overall. The issue is most experts are viewing this draft class as shallow. Both selections should draw interest if the Mavs front office decides to shop them.

The Jazz will likely get more appealing offers elsewhere. That speaks to the talent of Gobert and Dallas’ lack of tradeable assets. They are not moving Luka Doncic or Porzingis.

The Mavericks do not want to empty the cupboard trading away important rotation pieces like Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, and others. Throw in their limited draft picks, and it becomes difficult finding a deal that could get the Jazz front office ready to pull the trigger.

The Mavericks will make an offer, but they will likely be outbid for Rudy Gobert’s services if the Jazz decide to move the big man.
