Shot selection
Luka Doncic is already one of the NBA’s best scorers. He averages 28.7 points per game which puts him sixth in the league. Luka made a massive leap in 2-point percentage this season. He attacks the rim more and eliminated most of the mid-range jumpers from his game. That has allowed him to shoot 57.4 percent on his twos.
The struggle is his 3-point shooting. Luka is hitting just 31.8 percent on 9.1 attempts per game. It does not take a trained scouting eye to see that defenders respect Doncic’s shooting, though. Clearly, they believe he is a better marksman than the numbers suggest.
Diving further into the stats, he hits his patented step back three at 34.7 percent over 236 attempts this season, according to NBA Stats. That is closer to league average, but still below it.
Doncic takes a ton of difficult shots especially 3-pointers. It is an area where he can and will improve, though. Luka will both find easier looks and hit more of the tough ones.
Consider this, if Luka was shooting just 35 percent from three this season on the same number of attempts he would be averaging 29.6 points per game. Doncic has the potential to shot north of 35 percent on his 3-pointers too.
