Will the Mavericks trade their 2020 first round pick on draft night?
The Dallas Mavericks are projected to pick 20th and 31st according to Tankathon. Their ideal scenario may be packaging those two selections plus other pieces and trading for a third star.
It would eliminate the Mavs from the 2021 free agent sweepstakes which could feature Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and a host of other All-Stars.
The Mavericks would already have their third piece, though. Finding the right trade partner would be key. They do not want to sacrifice too much of their depth to grab another top tier talent. The Mavs will be light on cap space, so replacing anyone after the trade will be difficult.
Other teams may not value the combination of picks and players enough for them to trade away a true third star too. Then, the Mavericks should pivot away and perhaps try to acquire another rotation piece as they load up for free agency the next summer. As always trust Donnie Nelson and company. They are doing a fantastic job building Dallas into a contender.
Draft night figures to be an exciting one for the Dallas Mavericks. Be sure to tune in on June 25, so you do not miss a second of it.
