Dallas Mavericks: J.J. Barea will play a key role down the stretch
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea is going to make an impact as the team heads into the playoffs. See why the veteran will play a key role.
The Dallas Mavericks played 55 games before the All-Star break. They have won 33 and sit firmly in the playoff picture in the Western Conference. There have been improvements across the board. Luka Doncic has become a superstar. Kristaps Porzingis is the perfect second option. The Mavs have a host of role players pushing their two stars to greater heights.
One of the underused veterans has been J.J. Barea. The 35-year-old tore his Achilles last season and some questioned whether he would ever return. Barea is back but has only played in 17 games. The injury has not slowed him down.
J.J. is adjusting to a new role this season. The guard has been used as a change of pace option instead of his customary leader of the second unit spot.
That does not mean he has played poorly. Barea is averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 assists in 15.5 minutes per game on the year. He is shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 46.0 percent on his 3-pointers. J.J. continues to make an impact when he sees the court. He is a leader in the locker room too. The Mavs value his presence and experience even if he is not playing.
The Dallas Mavericks only have 27 games remaining in the regular season. Here is a look at why J.J. Barea will play a key role down the stretch.
