Dallas Mavericks: Kristaps Porzingis suffers broken nose vs. Grizzlies
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis had 32 points but broke his nose on Feb. 5 against the Memphis Grizzlies. See the latest on his injury here.
The Dallas Mavericks had a laundry list of injuries heading into Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Luka Doncic (ankle), Seth Curry (knee), J.J. Barea (ankle), and Dwight Powell (Achilles) were all held out. That is a ton of firepower on the bench.
The Mavs had the game tied 71 apiece midway through the third quarter on Feb. 5. Then, Kristaps Porzingis went to the bench, and Memphis took a lead. Coach Carlisle tried to bring KP back with 4:44 remaining, and Dallas down by eight. He was elbowed in the face by Josh Jackson just seconds later. The bloody nose forced Porzingis back to the locker room. That was all the Grizzlies needed to blow the game wide open.
The Mavericks ultimately lost 121-107 on their home floor. The news got worse during the postgame media availability. Here is what Porzingis had to say courtesy of Brad Townsend.
It was another strong performance from KP. He finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals, one block, and five 3-pointers made in 29 minutes of action. Fans can see his highlight reel below.
What it means going forward
Supporters will likely get another update after Porzingis visits with the doctor. The best they can hope for is he plays on Friday in Washington wearing a mask to protect his nose. The injury could force him to miss a few games, though. The Mavericks play on Friday and Saturday.
They only have four games remaining before the All-Star break. That is good news as the Mavs can use the week off to get healthy. Doncic, Porzingis, Curry, and Barea are all expected to be healthy following the break.
