Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic broke the team’s triple-doubles in a season record on Jan. 4. How many will the 20-year-old produce this season?

Dallas Mavericks fans know Luka Doncic is a walking triple-double. He had eight during his rookie season. The 20-year-old has taken significant steps forward in year two. He currently leads the NBA with ten triple-doubles in the Mavs first 35 games. Luka only played in 31 of those contests.

That is incredible. Doncic broke the Mavericks’ record for most triple-doubles in a season with his performance on Jan. 4 against the Charlotte Hornets. The season is not even half over.

Luka’s incredible feat forces supporters to ask, how many triple-doubles can he produce this season?

History

Russell Westbrooks holds the record for most triple-doubles in a single season with 42 in 2016-2017. That topped Oscar Robertson’s 41 in 1961-1962. Westbrook also led the NBA last season with 34.

To crack the top-ten all-time, Doncic would need to produce at least 22 triple-doubles this season. James Harden, Wilt Chamberlain, and Robertson are tied for eighth in NBA history with 22 apiece.

Pace

Luka Doncic has produced ten in 31 games. Assuming he misses a few more games this season, let us say Doncic plays in 75. His current pace would give 24 triple-doubles on the season. That is a historic rate. It would place him eighth all-time. No 20-year-old has ever produced numbers like Luka is this season.

Prediction

Dallas Mavericks fans should not be surprised if Luka Doncic goes off down the stretch. The 20-year-old has reached superstar status. Those players often improve their play as the postseason is approaching.

Consider this, Luka did not have his first triple-double last season until Jan. 21 against the Bucks. He produced eight in his final 28 games. That stretch included three games where he missed a triple-double by a single assist too.

Expect Luka Doncic to be in the neighborhood of 30 triple-doubles this season if he stays healthy. That should be enough to lead the NBA. Producing 27 or more would place him in the top-five all-time as well.

It is going to a magical season for Luka Doncic. The 20-year-old superstar is leading the Dallas Mavericks to the playoffs and producing at a historic rate. Fans need to stay tuned and not miss a second of the action.
