Dallas Mavericks forward Ryan Broekhoff fractured his left fibula on Dec. 29 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Here is the latest on his injury.

The Dallas Mavericks were without Ryan Broekhoff when they took on the Oklahoma City Thunder on New Year’s Eve. The forward injury his leg on Dec. 29 against the Lakers. He was joined Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. on the sidelines for Tuesday’s game.

Broekhoff was out of the rotation for most of the season, but he broke in on Dec. 20. It appeared that he passed Justin Jackson in the pecking order and was beginning to see nightly playing time. That all is about to change again.

Here is the latest on his injury and what the Dallas Mavericks do going forward.

Fractured leg

The Mavs PR released a statement on Ryan Broekhoff’s injury on Jan. 1. Here is a look at their tweet.

He will be out for an extended period of time. The typical fracture takes four to eight weeks to heel, but the placement of Broekhoff’s is tricky. Wesley Matthews broke his in March of 2018 while playing for the Mavs and missed the rest of the season. Expect it to be an extended absence for Broekhoff as well.

Who steps up?

It is easier to answer this question because Broekhoff was not in the rotation for most of the season. The Mavericks will be relying on Dorian Finney-Smith, Justin Jackson, and Tim Hardaway Jr. (when he’s back healthy) to fill the minutes on the wing.

Jackson needs to get back on track. He started the season strong but has tailed off significantly since Dec. 4. Jackson is shooting just 30.2 percent from the field and 15.6 percent on his 3-pointers over the last 13 games.

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Ryan Broekhoff for an extended period. That could also force them to make a trade to acquire some reinforcements. They will likely wait until closer to the deadline, though.
