Dallas Mavericks center Dwight Powell remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. Find out the latest update here and thoughts of when Powell returns.

Dallas Mavericks fans had penciled in Dwight Powell as the team’s starting center this season. He played phenomenally at the end of last year as a starter. Powell averaged 14.7 points and 7.6 rebounds in 30.9 minutes per over his final 22 games. The 28-year-old also got a contract extension this summer.

Those plans may be in the process of changing, though. Powell suffered a hamstring injury during practice on Oct. 5. He missed the team’s first two preseason games already.

The Mavs were set to play their first home game on Oct. 11. Coach Carlisle gave an update on Powell’s status before tipoff which fans can read below courtesy of Brad Townsend.

The Mavericks’ final preseason game takes place on Oct. 17 against the LA Clippers. Powell will be out through that date. It is positive that he is progressing, but fans should be worried about his status for the opening night of the regular season.

Miss games that count?

The Dallas Mavericks take the court for their first regular season game on Oct. 23 against the Washington Wizards.

There will be more injury updates on Powell before opening night, but it does not look positive. Unless he can get in at least a few full practices, the big man will struggle with his conditioning meaning playing a limited role. That is if he is healthy enough to suit up at all.

Powell should be considered doubtful for opening night as of this writing. That means the Mavs will likely start Maxi Kleber next to Kristaps Porzingis in the opening lineup. It paves the way for Kleber, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Boban Marjanovic to play additional minutes until Powell is healthy.
