Dallas Mavericks fans were disappointed when Slovenia failed to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Reigning Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic could not play in the qualifiers because he was starring for the Mavericks.

Supporters may remember that the last time Doncic played for Slovenia, the country won EuroBasket 2017. He and his countryman Goran Dragic both made the All-Tournament team. It was a surprising result and in many ways Doncic introduction to being a star.

Not being part of the World Cup put Slovenia’s chances of qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in major doubt. Luka Doncic and his country got positive news recently.

In last-chance qualifier

Slovenia grabbed a spot in the final qualifying tournament for the Olympics. This competition will feature 24 teams, and four will head to Tokyo for the Olympics. The tournament takes place on from June 23rd to the 28th.

12 teams will compete in the Olympic games. Eight are already qualified through the World Cup including Team USA.

Doncic to play if healthy

Luka Doncic talked about his disappointment of Slovenia not qualifying qualifying for the World Cup during last season. He was clear that he will take part in playing for his country whenever he is fit enough. That is a bold statement considering how many NBA players are opting not to play.

Slovenia should be considered one of the favorites to grab an Olympic qualifying spot. Their run at EuroBasket was impressive. Doncic is one of the world’s top players which is a massive advantage in FIBA play. He is used to the international game growing up playing for Real Madrid too.
