The Dallas Mavericks traded their first round pick to the Hawks in the Luka Doncic deal. That left them with a lone pick in the 2019 draft. The Mavs used it to trade back grabbing two additional second rounders and Isaiah Roby.

Early returns on Roby have been strong. The 6’8 combo forward played well in summer league. He showed some ball-handling and playmaking ability. Roby excels on the defensive end and has the ability to switch onto guards. Here are his highlights from Vegas.

Role this season

Isaiah Roby signed a four-year $6.7 million deal with the Mavericks this offseason. The first two years are fully guaranteed. Roby is part of the 15-man roster but is well down the depth chart. He figures to play both forward spots. The Mavs have Justin Jackson and Dorian Finney-Smith directly ahead of him as combo forwards. Roby will not be part of the rotation to begin the season.

The 21-year-old will get plenty of run with the Texas Legends, though. It will be interesting to see how the Mavs develop Roby. Will they try to make him a ball-handling three? Do the Mavericks decide he is best suited as a small-ball four? Fans should be on the lookout for his development in Frisco this season.
