Even though Dirk Nowitzki is now retired, he is still an important part of the Dallas Mavericks, the city of Dallas in general and the NBA. However, he was completely overlooked yesterday in favor of a younger Dallas icon.
Although it has gone fairly unreported, Dallas Mavericks legend and future first-ballot Hall of Famer, Dirk Nowitzki, has been helping out as an international ambassador for the FIBA World Cup currently being played in China. Dirk has been in China for a little while, but returned home yesterday.
Upon his arrival at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dirk tweeted about a swarm of media waiting as he landed. Naturally, Dirk took this time to make a joke about himself as opposed to believing that he is all that after his career (spoiler alert: he still is).
Apparently the media presence at the airport was not there in order to see a 7-foot German step off a plane and wonder how he even fit in there. No, instead they were there for a 6-foot football player from Missouri. Alright, maybe that is not the usual introduction you hear for Dallas Cowboys running back, Ezekiel Elliott.
After realizing what exactly was going on, Dirk got on Twitter and tweeted out this gem…
Came home from China to all these cameras at the airport. I thought to myself: “ Man. I still got it!!” Turns out they were all there for zeke....

Despite the fact that the press wasn’t there for Dirk (which isn’t surprising after following Nowitzki’s career and tendencies to shy away from the cameras whenever possible), it is pretty cool that he has been spending his time out in China to be an ambassador to the sport.
Dirk is considered one of if not the best foreign born NBA player in league history and getting him to help out with the World Cup games out in China was a smart move from FIBA. If we were at the airport, it would have been for you, Dirk.
The Dallas Mavericks may not have Dirk anymore, but the Dallas Cowboys may be getting Zeke back for the foreseeable future, so I guess good things could still be coming from this unique moment.
