Dallas Mavericks: Dorian Finney-Smith gives fans a show in pick-up game
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith produced a plethora of highlights in a recent pick-up game featuring plenty of NBA talent.
The Dallas Mavericks re-signed restricted free agent Dorian Finney-Smith this summer. He inked a three-year deal worth $12 million. That is a bargain for a 26-year-old that averaged 24.5 minutes per game last season.
Finney-Smith will be in a battle for playing time in the coming year, though. The Mavs added Seth Curry and Delon Wright to compete for guard minutes. That will push players like Tim Hardaway Jr. into playing at the three. THJ, Justin Jackson, and Finney-Smith will all likely compete during training camp for one starting spot.
Dorian Finney-Smith has worked on his game this offseason. He showed it during a recent pick-up game. Mavs supporters can view the highlights here.
Finney-Smith showed off a plethora of moves in the video. He threw down an alley-oop from Luka Doncic that was enough to get fans fired up. The scrimmage featured current Mavericks Doncic, Justin Jackson, and Isaiah Roby plus former Mav Monta Ellis.
More important than the highlight dunks was Doe-Doe sinking his 3-pointers. He has proven that he can be an above-average NBA defender. The floor spacing on the offensive end needs to improve, though. Finney-Smith shot 31.1 percent from 3-point range last season.
The fact that he hit four including a step-back in the video is a promising sign. If Finney-Smith can knock them down at a league-average clip, he will start and see more minutes this season. The 26-year-old is capable of achieving that goal.
Working out with Luka
Dorian Finney-Smith was also spotted working out with Luka Doncic at the Mavs practice facility on Aug. 29.
The fact that he is putting in work with multiple teammates already should be an advantage early in the 2019-2020 season. Finney-Smith will have better timing and chemistry than some of his opponents. Hopefully, the camaraderie allows for a fast start. Dallas has not had that during their last three seasons.
