Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis has returned to Dallas well ahead of training camp. Why that is good news for the Mavs.

The Dallas Mavericks made a massive commitment to Kristaps Porzingis before he has ever taken the court in their uniform. They gave up two first round picks, two starters, and Dennis Smith Jr. to acquire him from the Knicks in January. The front office signed the restricted free agent big man to a five-year $158.3 million max contract this summer to keep him in Dallas.

That is a ton to invest in any player. Porzingis is recovering from a torn ACL and missed all of last season. It is not often a 24-year-old All-Star is available, though. One that is aptly nicknamed the Unicorn is even less likely.

Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki summed it up best just after the trade last season. Here is his quote courtesy of Dwain Price.

KP back in Dallas

Dallas Mavericks supporters got some positive news on Friday as Kristaps Porzingis returned to Dallas to begin preparing for the upcoming season.

Why it matters

Training camp starts for the Mavs on Oct. 1. That means Porzingis back a month ahead of schedule.

It is important for him more than any other player on the roster. He has not played in an NBA game since Feb. 6, 2018. Porzingis minimally practice with the team last season after the trade. He is going to be rusty and has to gel with a new set of teammates.

Luka Doncic is already in Dallas. The two stars can begin working on their chemistry. Having an extra month to prepare could pay dividends early in the season. The Mavs are going to run a ton of Doncic and Porzingis pick and rolls. That play will take a bit to get down. More reps mean improved execution.

Doncic was seen scrimmaging with numerous other Mavericks this week. That could be a massive advantage for the entire team in October.
