Entering the 2018-2019 season, the Mavs had consecutive lottery picks to build around. Dennis Smith Jr. was entering his second year flanked by rookie Luka Doncic. Both were skilled ball-handlers ready to push Dallas back to contention.
DSJ was traded to New York to acquire Kristaps Porzingis in January. Now, Mavs supporters are dreaming about the pick and pop game from Doncic and the Unicorn for the foreseeable future.
That is no knock on Smith Jr. The 21-year-old is the favorite to be the Knicks starting point guard this season. He has a bright future ahead of him. DSJ frustrated Mavs fans at times, but he also brought joy. His dunking ability is top-notch. There were glimmers of promise during his season and a half in Dallas.

It will be interesting to watch DSJ’s progression this season. He still has the potential to be an All-Star. Smith Jr. needs to continue his development, though. Mavericks fans should be rooting for the young point guard to reach his ceiling.
There is plenty of excitement about the coming season. The Mavs are hoping to make the playoffs in the crowded Western Conference. They will continue to build around Doncic and Porzingis as well. Watching their young star duo in action will be a treat.
