Dallas Mavericks fans have seen more roster turnover than it appears in recent seasons. Let us take a deep dive into the tenure of the current Mavs.
The Dallas Mavericks have not qualified for the playoffs since 2016. Dirk Nowitzki, the greatest player in franchise history retired at the conclusion of last season. The team should be undergoing personnel changes.
Perhaps, that is why Mavs fans were upset when the team prioritized re-signing their talent in free agency this summer. They inked a five-year max contract with Kristaps Porzingis. The front office also brought back Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, Dorian Finney-Smith, and J.J. Barea. That appears to give the Mavericks a lot of continuity, but they may not be the case.
Bobby Karalla shared some interesting tweets on Aug. 19 when the Dallas Mavericks made the Barea signing official.
Here's the order of Mavs players by longest tenure:
— Bobby Karalla (@bobbykaralla) August 19, 2019
1. Barea (October 2014)
2. Dwight Powell (December 2014)
3. Dorian Finney-Smith (July 2016)
4. Maxi Kleber (July 2017)
5. LUKA DONCIC (June 2018)
New era.
It is worth noting, that Barea played for Dallas from 2006 to 2011 as well. He is the last member of Mavericks’ 2011 championship team still on the roster. That was only eight years ago.
It is amazing that 11 of the 15 current Mavs have been on the roster for one full season or less. Player movement happens fast and frequently in the current NBA, but that stat is mind-blowing.
The team has struggled in recent years. Along with failing to make the playoffs three straight seasons, Dallas has not made it out of the first round since winning the title.
Loyalty
The Mavericks remain one of the most loyal organizations. They kept their star in one uniform during his entire 21 season career. Dirk’s tenure was the longest in NBA history with a single team.
The key decision-makers remain constant too. Mark Cuban bought the team in 2000. Head coach Rick Carlisle was hired in 2008. He is entering his 12th season and is the third longest tenured head coach. GM/President Donnie Nelson was hired in 2005 and been the top decision-maker for the fifth-most time in the NBA.
Going forward
The Dallas Mavericks were searching for pieces to build the roster around after winning just 90 games in the last three seasons combined. They have Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis now. Both are immensely talented young players with the upside to the lead the Mavs back to the postseason.
The front office needs to find pieces that excel around their star duo. The additions of Delon Wright and Seth Curry were viewed as just that.
Expect the Mavs to have more roster continuity in the years ahead. They have Doncic and Porzingis locked in for multiple seasons. The team will continue building around them until they have a contender. Hopefully, that happens soon.
Things will continue to change fast in the NBA, but do not worry because The Smoking Cuban will cover it all for Dallas Mavericks supporters. Check back often to keep up to date.
