Dallas Mavericks: Former Mav Salah Mejri standing out for Tunisia

Dallas Mavericks fans know Salah Mejri well. The free agent big man is making a case to be signed by an NBA team with his recent play.

The Dallas Mavericks signed Boban Marjanovic this offseason to replace Salah Mejri. The Mej has played his entire four-year NBA career with the Mavs. He remains a free agent searching for his home for the coming season.

While Mejri waits for a contract, he is playing for his native Tunisia as they prepare for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in September. He is making a strong case this week. Let us take a closer look.

Drops 30 versus Germany

The Germany National Team defeated Tunisia 89-70 on Aug. 23. Mejri was the game’s leading scoring, though. He dropped 30 including hitting three of his five 3-point attempts. Mejri also produced 13 rebounds, one assist, and three blocks in 39.2 minutes of action.

The German’s frontline includes former teammate Maxi Kleber and Celtics center, Daniel Theis. Mejri finished 12 of 20 from the field against them. It was an impressive performance from the seven-footer.

Nets 20 in win over Japan

Mejri produced an impressive encore in Tunisia’s 78-76 win over Japan on Sunday.  He had 20 points, ten rebounds, one assist, one steal, and five blocks in 36.7 minutes of action.

Mejri is the team’s center and primary roll man. He is displaying a ton of energy. He continues to produce for his country.

Salah Mejri will be the key for Tunisia at the upcoming World Cup. They have a chance to advance to the knockout stage. Tunisia is in Group C. Their first game is on Aug. 31 against Spain. Iran and Puerto Rico are the other two teams in their group.

Mejri will be hoping his performance in China earns him a contract for the upcoming season. He should have options in Europe, China, and potentially Australia. Mejri appears to be holding out for an NBA deal, though. It may take an injury for that to occur at this point.
