Dallas Mavericks: Boban Marjanovic fails to play in Serbia’s win over Italy

Dallas Mavericks center Boban Marjanovic did not leave the bench as his Serbian National Team defeated Italy in the AusTiger Cup on Aug. 23.

The Dallas Mavericks cornered the market on 7’3 NBA players in the last year. They traded for Kristaps Porzingis in January. This summer the front office signed Boban Marjanovic to a two-year deal. Both men are listed at 7’3.

Marjanovic is currently representing his country of Serbia as they prepare for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Here is the latest on their current competition.

AusTiger Cup

Serbia is currently in China playing in the AusTiger Cup. They are joined by France, Italy, and New Zealand. It is a round-robin tournament that takes place from Aug. 23 to Aug. 27. They are exhibition games as the team’s prep for September’s World Cup.

Serbia defeats Italy

Serbia kicked off the tournament on Friday with a 71-65 win over Italy. Sacramento Kings guard Bogdan Bogdanovic led Serbia in scoring with 15 points.

Boban Marjanovic did not play versus Italy.

Serbia remains undefeated since exhibition play began in August. They have eight wins with two games remaining before the World Cup begins.

The Serbian National Team plays New Zealand on Aug. 25. New Zealand lost two games to Canada in Australia this week. Expect Serbia to be a massive favorite.

Serbia is part of Group D at the World Cup. They open the tournament playing Angola on Aug. 31. Serbia and Italy are in the same group as well. Marjanovic’s squad remain one of the favorites to win the tournament along with Team USA.

It will be interesting to see how much playing time Boban Marjanovic receives at the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Serbia has NBA All-Star Nikola Jokic at center. Marjanovic could be a difference maker in the right matchup, though.
