Dallas Mavericks point guard J.J. Barea was spotted getting up shots in the gym as he continues his recovery from an Achilles repair.

Dallas Mavericks fans are a bit torn by the deal with J.J. Barea this summer. He is a Mavericks legend and was a crucial piece of the 2011 championship squad. The addition of Jalen Brunson and his stellar rookie season have some supporters wanting him to take over Barea’s engine of the second unit role.

It some respects it is understandable. Barea is 35 years old and tore his Achilles in January. There is no telling how healthy J.J. will be at the start of the regular season. Fans are quick to forget how good Barea was playing before the injury, though. He may have been showcasing the best ball of his career to start last season.

Regardless of which side of the debate you fall on, Barea is working hard to regain his form. The Mavericks posted a GIF of him shooting on Aug. 6.

Barea dropped out of the 2019 FIBA World Cup to focus on his recovery. That was a massive development considering how much Barea values playing for his country. It is likely a sign that the point guard is still not ready for 5-on-5 action yet.

Barea’s health and playing time will be something to monitor all season long. Wesley Matthews tore his Achilles in March 2015 and played for the Mavericks on the opening night of the following season. It often takes a year to fully recover, though. Expect Barea’s jumper to be off as he regains his lift.

Brunson could have the opportunity to take the job and run with it if J.J. can’t play on opening night. It will be worth following during training camp.
