Dallas Mavericks big man Dwight Powell withdrew from the Canadian National Team’s World Cup squad on Friday. Here is why that could be a plus for the Mavs.

Dallas Mavericks center Dwight Powell is coming off the best season of his career. The front office rewarded him with a contract extension this offseason.

Naturally, Powell’s native Canada wanted him to play for them in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. He was even named to the preliminary squad last month.

That won’t be happening, though. According to Marc Stein, Powell withdrew from World Cup consideration on Aug. 2.

A plus for Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks were likely happy to see Dwight Powell take his name out of the running. Forget the injury risk. The Mavs do not want him to miss valuable time with his teammates.

Most national teams are starting their preparations next week. The tournament wraps up in mid-September. That is a lengthy period away from an NBA squad.

Powell is expected to be the opening night starter for the first time in his NBA career. He will be sharing the frontcourt with new Mav Kristaps Porzingis.

The two will be playing specific roles in the coming year. Powell figures to serve as the center on offense with KP playing stretch four. The roles flip on defense with Porzingis protecting the rim, and Powell guarding more on the perimeter.

The Mavericks want their team beginning to gel this month. Expect Luka Doncic and Porzingis to be working out in Dallas before the start of September. Having the entire starting five there would be a plus.

Kristaps needs court time after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. It will take reps to integrate him into the Mavs lineup too. Better that it happens now than during the regular season.

Dwight Powell will have other opportunities to represent Canada. The next will likely be the 2020 Olympics. The Dallas Mavericks will be happy to see him play if they make the playoffs in the coming season. Hopefully, Powell achieves both goals in 2020.
