The Dallas Mavericks still have one available roster spot going into the 2019-20 season. It is looking less and less likely that Devin Harris will be back with the team, but someone should be interested in the veteran guard.

The Dallas Mavericks and Devin Harris have been linked together in some way since Harris was drafted from the University of Wisconsin in 2004. With the fifth selection in 2004, the Washington Wizards traded the draft pick to Dallas who then selected Harris. Harris became a part of the rotation immediately in his rookie season and was a regular starter just two years later.

The year after that, the Mavericks traded Harris to the then New Jersey Nets. He played great in New Jersey for two full and two partial seasons before getting shipped to the Utah Jazz. One partial and one full season later, he was with the Atlanta Hawks for a year before finding his way back to Dallas. Aside from a brief stint in Denver last year, Harris has been in Dallas ever since.

Despite spending time with other teams, Devin Harris has been considered an MFFL through and through for several years. He has embraced the city of Dallas along with the people here and has been blessing the community year after year.

The Mavs currently have only one remaining roster spot open and it is unclear who might receive that spot. I feel like it Harris was going to earn that final spot, the Mavs would have already signed him. Either Dallas has something up their sleeve, or they are looking to move on from Harris, but either way it seems like his time on the Mavs may be over.

As a big fan of Harris, this is a sad realization. Devin has been one of those guys that you never had to worry whether he would give it his all every single night or not. One of the most energetic players I have ever watched, Harris left it all on the court at all times.

If the Mavericks really do let Harris walk, I hope another team picks him up. Harris is one of only a few players still on the market that has veteran experience, leadership experience and is able to contribute on both ends of the court. He may not be able to stay healthy for a full season, but he is still very good when he hits the court.

Any team looking for some vet help should be at least considering an offer to Devin. That is why the Nuggets wanted him just last year and he did well in the role they brought him in for. Another chance at that kind of role makes a lot of sense.

No matter what happens, Devin Harris will always be beloved in the city of Dallas and amongst Mavericks fans. With 608 games under his belt in a Mavericks jersey, he deserves all the respect we can give to him and more. Hopefully this isn’t the last we see of No. 34.
