Dallas Mavericks decision-makers handed out three long-term deals this offseason. The other 29 NBA teams only agreed to 17 combined.

The Dallas Mavericks entered the summer with plenty of cap space. They also had the desire to lockdown Kristaps Porzingis as the co-star to Luka Doncic in the Mavs next contending team. Ultimately, the front office may have decided to zig while other teams were zagging.

The NBA free agent crop was loaded this offseason. It featured numerous All-Stars and All-NBA performers. That meant plenty of money would get spent locking those players down.

Mavs go long-term

11 men received deals of at least four years and over $100 million total. Porzingis joined that group as he agreed to five-year $158.3 million max deal with the Mavericks. He has a player option in 2023. That is not surprising as ten of those men were All-Stars at some point during their career.

There were nine other contracts of at least four seasons handed out. The Mavs gave out two of them. They were responsible for the second and third lowest total value of the deals too. Maxi Kleber earned a four-year $34 million contract, and Seth Curry received four years at $32 million. Only Ivica Zubac’s four years for $28.5 million was for less money.

The Mavericks saw value in handing out those two long-term deals. It may have to do with trying to build continuity around their young core. Fans need to remember that Luka is only 20 years old, and Porzingis is 23. Having two building blocks that are so young is an advantage.

The front office also locked down two players that are often undervalued despite their numbers. Kleber is an above-average rim protector. Seth Curry is one of the NBA’s best 3-point shooters. Both players will now be Mavericks for the foreseeable future. The team’s decision-makers did well.
