Dallas Mavericks: Dwight Powell invited to Canadian National Team camp

Dallas Mavericks big man Dwight Powell will be a member of the Canadian National Team’s training camp in the lead up to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Dallas Mavericks fans know Dwight Powell can be a problem on the basketball court. He shot 59.7 percent from the field last season. It was his best NBA performance. Powell averaged 10.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 21.6 minutes per game.

The 6’11 big man signed a three-year extension will the Mavericks worth $33 million this offseason. That kicks in after the 2019-2020 season. Powell will be an unrestricted free agent in 2023. The Mavs are expecting him to play a crucial role as they push towards contention with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis leading the charge.

Powell is a force as a roll man. He has thrown down plenty of monster dunks during his four and half seasons with the Mavericks. Expect him to only improve. Powell will be 28 years old for the entire 2019-2020 season.

Powell invited to training camp

He received another honor on July 16. Dwight Powell was invited to the Canadian National Team training camp for the upcoming FIBA World Cup. He was one of 29 listed participants. Of those players, 12 will be selected to represent Canada in the tournament which begins on Aug. 31 in China.

Powell is a favorite to make their final roster. He is one of five current NBA forwards on their training camp squad. Canada has plenty of NBA talent and will be one of the medal favorites heading into the tournament.

The Canadian squad faces a tough group at the World Cup, though. They are in Group H with Australia and Lithuania. Those will be some exciting matchups in what is always a fantastic event to watch.
