Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis received a new five-year max contract this offseason. The deal features a player option in 2023.

Dallas Mavericks fans were a bit disappointed this summer. They expected game-changing upgrades in free agency, but instead, the front office focused on retaining their talent and filling roster holes.

The linchpin move was signing Kristaps Porzingis to a five-year max contract. The deal was made official on July 12.

The signing should not be taken for granted. When the Mavs traded for Porzingis in January, reports said he may opt to play out the 2019-2020 season on the qualifying offer to hit unrestricted free agency next summer.

Mavericks fans are excited to see him playing for Dallas. The 23-year-old former All-Star has not seen the court in an NBA game since Feb. 2018 because of a knee injury. Porzingis is difficult to stop when he is 100 percent health. That is what Mavs supporters are hoping for to start next season.

It is easy to forget the Unicorn averaged 22.7 points, 1.9 3-pointers, and 2.4 blocks in 32.4 minutes per game the last time he played.

New deal

The details of his contract also trickled in on Friday. According to Shams Charania, KP has a player option for the final year of his deal.

Porzingis is locked up for the next four seasons, though. According to Spotrac, he is set to make $27.285 million in the coming year. His salary increases each season. KP’s player option for the 2023-2024 season is worth just over $36 million. Porzingis will only be 28 years old at that time, so he will likely opt out to secure a new long-term deal.

Zinger possesses a unique combination of scoring, shooting, and rim protecting ability. He will certainly have Mavericks fans jumping out of their chairs plenty over the next few seasons. Hopefully, it is another All-Star season for Kristaps Porzingis and a playoff run for the Dallas Mavericks in 2020.
