The Dallas Mavericks are rumored to be offering restricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis a five-year max contract this summer.

Dallas Mavericks fans are pumped to see Kristaps Porzingis in a Mavs uniform. The January trade was a blockbuster. The Mavericks gave up four starters to make the deal happen and to retain cap space for this summer. Fans are waiting to see the prize of the trade suit up and show off his superb talent.

Porzingis is fully recovered from his torn ACL. He is practicing. The big man should be ready to play 30-plus minutes on opening night. Here is the latest on Kristaps Porzingis.

Mavs extend a qualifying offer

The Dallas Mavericks gave Porzingis a qualifying offer. The team had to present him a one-year $4.485 million contract in order to make Porzingis a restricted free agent. Now, the Mavs have the right to match any offer sheet KP signs this summer.

If Porzingis wants to leave Dallas, he could play out the one deal and be an unrestricted free agent in 2020. That scenario seems unlikely at this moment.

Mavericks offering max deal

Shams Charania reported that the Mavs are going to offer a full five-year max contract to Kristaps.

Dallas has a distinct advantage here too. Not only can they match any offer sheet Porzingis signs, the Maverics also have the leverage of that fifth season. The max contract he can ink with any other NBA team is four years for $117.18 million.

Reports suggest that Porzingis is enjoying his time in Dallas and he is likely to sign the five-year max when the dust settles. The Mavericks would be wise to hold off on signing Porzingis until they have made their other moves, though. That allows the team to maximize their cap space and put improved pieces around the former All-Star.
