Dallas Mavericks free agent target Patrick Beverley will have a meeting with the team after free agency opens. Read the latest here.

The Dallas Mavericks want to return to the playoffs next season. They have not made the postseason since 2016.  The Mavs have not advanced past the first round since they won the title in 2011.

Those droughts could end quickly, though. The Mavericks have a budding superstar in Luka Doncic. They traded for an All-Star running mate in Kristaps Porzingis. The front office also has cap space to improve their roster this summer. The Mavs are a few pieces away from being a contender in the deep Western Conference.

One of their most glaring weaknesses is defending against an elite point guard. Not many NBA players can handle guarding Stephen Curry or Damian Lillard, but Dallas lacks an option on that end of the floor. That all may change, though.

Mavs meeting with Beverley

Brad Townsend dropped the following tweet on June 24.

In many ways, Beverley is the perfect fit for the Mavericks. He is not going to take the ball out of Luka’s hands. Doncic can run the offense with Beverley serving as a spot up shooter. On defense, Luka can conserve his energy guarding a wing or forward, and Beverley can take on the opposition’s best scorer.

Pat Bev would also bring toughness and energy to the Mavs. The 6’1 guard gets after it on both ends of the floor. The young Mavericks could use a boost in that area.

Beverley figures to have a strong market in free agency. He turns 31 in July, so the Dallas decision-makers have to be careful not to overspend. The future is bright for the Mavs. They cannot give Beverley a long-term deal at a massive price tag if they want to maximize Luka Doncic’s chances of winning a title.
