Dallas Mavericks make Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith restricted free agents

Dallas Mavericks fans can feel the excitement building for free agency. The Mavs have cap space and plan on using it to build around Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic. They have a plethora of options that supporters are salivating over right now.

The Mavericks did their part to keep two of their own free agents on June 26. The Mavs extended a qualifying offer to both Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith according to Tim MacMahon.

The qualifying offers are one-year deals for each player. Finney-Smith’s is for $1.931 million, and Kleber’s deal is $1.818 million. It makes both players restricted free agents this offseason. That means the Mavericks can match any offer sheet that either man signs.

The players still have options in this case. If either man wants out of Dallas, they could play out the one-year deal and become an unrestricted free agent free to sign with any team in 2020.

The Mavs want both players back in Dallas. Kleber took a massive step forward as a rim protector and jump shooter this season. His ability to play as a stretch five will have other teams interested. Finney-Smith is a strong and versatile defender with an improving offensive game.

It would take a massive offer sheet for either man to be playing elsewhere to start next season. Things like that happen in free agency, though. The Mavericks would be smart to let either man walk if the contract is out of hand. The team has a bright future. They cannot afford to overpay on a role player.
