Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis appears set to sign a long-term max deal with the Mavs in restricted free agency this summer.
Dallas Mavericks supporters were fired up when they traded for Kristaps Porzingis. The 7’3 big man is one of the most difficult covers in the NBA. Porzingis can space the floor and score in a variety of ways. He is also one of the league’s best rim protectors.
Getting KP to pair with Luka Doncic has fans excited about the future of the Mavs. Both men are in their early 20’s and could grow into a superstar tandem that wins a lot of basketball games.
The trade was a slight risk, though. Porzingis was set to hit restricted free agency this summer. The Mavericks already made him a qualifying offer, but there was a bit of concern that he would play out the one-year deal and leave in 2020.
That does not appear probable according to Brad Townsend.
The Mavs would be smart to wait a few days before signing Kristaps Porzingis. That would allow the team to maximize their cap space and build the best possible team around their two young stars.
The tweet was welcomed news to all Mavericks fans, though. Supporters cannot wait to see Porzingis in a Mavs uniform. His special talent should bring a few exciting new elements to the team’s game plan.
The two stars forming a strong bond this summer should also benefit the Mavericks. Expect the team to be hunting a defensive-minded point guard and a strong rebounding center in free agency. Those additions should round out the roster and put the Mavs in the thick of the playoff hunt next season.
