The BIG3 basketball league has started another year, and this one comes with even more former Dallas Mavericks players than the last. In total, nine different players in the league played for the Mavs at one point or another.

There are nine former Dallas Mavericks players who made a BIG3 roster this season and almost all of them proved in the first week that they belong in this league. For those who are unfamiliar with it, the BIG3 is a 3-on-3 basketball league started by Ice Cube and others. The league is made up primarily of retired NBA players and has certain requirements for who can and can’t play.

The BIG3 is growing in popularity each year, so much so that they added four new teams to the league this year, making a total of 12 teams. These teams are coached by former NBA and WNBA players, many of them legends of the game.

Each roster has 5-6 players with a team captain, two co-captains and two or three other players. With a maximum potential of only 72 players in the league, it is very interesting that there are nine total former Dallas Mavericks. Some of them are familiar names while others you probably won’t recognize.

Let’s take a look at the stats of these 9 guys that played this past weekend for the first week of the BIG3 season.

Jason Terry is the captain of the team Trilogy. Even though we have seen many times where Terry has been able to take over games, this new league and his advanced age may have taken a toll on him in week one. Terry finished the game with only 2 points, 3 rebounds and a steal and Trilogy lost to the 3 Headed Monsters.

DeShawn Stevenson is a name we all love hearing still here in Dallas. Stevenson helped lead the Mavs to a 2011 NBA Championship and is now trying to lead his squad, Ball Hogs, to a BIG3 title. Unfortunately, that path will have to start next week because the Ball Hogs got taken down by the Jamario Moon led Ghost Ballers, 50-39. Stevenson scored 10 points, had 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Amar’e Stoudemire joined the Dallas Mavericks late in his career, but he joined the BIG3 shortly after his retirement. Stoudemire continued the trend of the Mavs losing in week one with Tri-State falling to the Killer 3’s, 54-52. Stoudemire, however, had a great game, putting together a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Next stop on the tour of Mavs past, Drew Gooden is a current member of the BIG3 and co-captain of the team 3’s Company. Once again, the Mavs player took the loss, this time to Cuttino Mobley and the defending champions, Power. Gooden led his team in scoring with 12 points and also grabbed 4 rebounds.

Our first winner on the list is Josh Powell with the Killer 3’s. Powell’s team helped take down Stoudemire, despite his big double-double. Powell also led his team in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and 9 rebounds, but he got more help from his teammates and took home the win.

Next up is a trio of guys that most people won’t remember in Mavs uniforms. Anthony Morrow, Shawne Williams and C.J. Leslie are all either captains or were drafted by team Bivouac. Bivouac played the Enemies this weekend and took them down with a final score of 50-43. The team was led in scoring by Will Bynum, but the three former Mavs combined for 28 points and 20 rebounds.

Last on the list is some guy named Lamar Odom. I won’t get into the fact that he plays for a team named the Enemies because it is almost too easy. Either way, Odom really dialed back the clock for a performance much like many he gave to the Dallas Mavericks with his 2 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.

All of these players deserve to be in the BIG3 and seem to be enjoying the post-NBA competition at the very least. More updates on how all the former Mavs do in their games will be available here at The Smoking Cuban going forward.
