Dallas Mavericks: Dwight Powell to accept player option and sign extension

Dallas Mavericks fans have been wondering about the future of Dwight Powell in recent weeks. Powell has a $10.2 million player option for next season. He expressed his desire to remain in Dallas during his exit interview. GM Donnie Nelson also stated his intention to keep Powell with the Mavericks.

Supporters were thrown a curveball when Yahoo Sports reported that was opting out to become an unrestricted free agent.

Powell opting in

Mavericks fans should be happy with the news. Powell is coming off the best season of his NBA career. He averaged 21.6 minutes, 10.6 points, and 5.3 rebounds. Powell shot 59.7 percent from the field. The team believes the best is yet to come too.

Clearly, the Mavs have faith that Powell is going to continue to improve and expand his game. He turns 28 in July. Fans should be excited about Powell’s future.

Available cap space

Having Dwight Powell returning for $10.2 million had some supporters worried about their available cap space. Brad Townsend had fans covered there too.
