At one point considered a potential top five pick, Rui Hachimura has dropped pretty significantly in a majority of NBA mock drafts. He is still a solid player with a lot of upside, but some of his inabilities on the court have reared their ugly heads after choosing to return for his sophomore season despite some telling him it wasn’t a good idea.
The Spurs are kind of the dream scenario for most guys who have lost favor in the public eye for one reason or another. Players like Kawhi Leonard, Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker all fell on draft day for some strange reason and they all found themselves in Spurs uniforms performing better than the latest expectations.
Rui is a high energy player who can score the ball in the post at an impressive rate. He is big and strong and knows how best to use his body to create separation or draw fouls. He was able to extend his offense out to the midrange this year but is still working on a long ball. His athleticism makes him a good defender that needs some more honing of his skills.
Hachimura is still a young player who has not been playing the game for a super long time. He has some lapses in judgment that have to be reconciled and he will still need to develop a deep shot as time goes on. His defense has not been at the level that Gonzaga was hoping for, but it still shows some promise.
Player Comparison: Wilson Chandler
Wilson Chandler is a guy that is happy to attack the basket at any given time even though he is rarely as big as some of the guys he goes up against. He can score in a variety of different ways and his high energy make him a solid defender, a tool that Rui has but is still trying to hone correctly.
