NBA Draft: Shamorie Ponds schedules workout with the Dallas Mavericks

The NBA Draft has Dallas Mavericks fans excited already. The Mavs are working out former St. John’s point guard Shamorie Ponds.

The Dallas Mavericks are facing an important night for the franchise on May 14. The NBA Draft lottery takes place, and the Mavs need to move into the top four to keep their first-round pick. If not, it heads to Atlanta as part of last year’s Luka Doncic trade.

The Mavericks still have their second-round pick, though. Dallas got a steal by selecting Jalen Brunson early in the second round in 2018. They will be looking to repeat the feat this time around.

Shamorie Ponds clearly has plenty of suitors and rightfully so. He averaged 19.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.0 3-pointers made, and 2.6 steals per game in 35.1 minutes a night last season for St. John’s. Ponds shot 45.3 percent from the field, 35.3 percent on his threes, and 83.6 percent from the foul line. He was ninth in the NCAA in steals.

Ponds is projected to be a second-round selection in the 2019 NBA Draft. ESPN ranks him as the 49th best available prospect and the fifth point guard in the class.
