The Dallas Mavericks have cap space to improve their roster this offseason. Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer suggests they could use it on Danilo Gallinari.

Dallas Mavericks fans are prepping for an exciting and emotional offseason. They have money to spend in free agency and the motivation to compete for a playoff spot next season. The Mavs could go in many different directions to create a contender.

They have two building blocks in Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. The Mavericks also have role players to help. The organization is just a few on-court pieces away from making a significant leap in the standings.

Having cap space means plenty of rumors will swirl this offseason. The Mavs will be linked to a plethora of free agents and trade candidates. Fans will have to decide which of those rumors have merit.

Mavs interested in Galo?

Kevin O’Connor wrote an in-depth piece for The Ringer on the LA Clippers and how they could add two max contract players this summer. Fans can read it here.

In that article, O’Connor details that the Clippers would have to trade away Danilo Gallinari to create the cap space to add both max deals. He also links the Dallas Mavericks as a team that could be interested in acquiring Gallo.

Gallinari is a combo forward that turns 31 years old in August. He is coming off arguably his best NBA season. The Rooster averaged 19.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 30.3 minutes per game this season. He is under contract next season for $22.6 million and is a free agent in 2020.

Adding Gallinari is a bit risky. The forward has 11 years of NBA experience but has only played over 70 games twice. In the last five seasons, Gallinari played 59, 53, 63, 21, and 68 contests. The injury history is significant. He always produces but is a gamble to stay healthy.

The Mavericks could convince the Clippers to attach draft picks and other young pieces to make the deal worthwhile, but that seems unlikely. Dallas traded three first-round selections in the last year to acquire Doncic and Porzingis. They want to compete as soon as possible.

Final thoughts

Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer reports the Dallas Mavericks could be interested in acquiring Danilo Gallinari. That option becomes more likely if the Mavs strike out on the big name free agents. It gives Dallas a way to use their cap space and have another opportunity to reel in a significant target in 2020.
