Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic is a problem on the basketball court. At 6’7, he can pass and make plays like a point guard. That makes him nearly impossible to guard on the offensive end of the floor. The Mavs also have the flexibility of letting Doncic check the power forward because of his height and size.

At 20 years old, Luka completed a historic rookie season. He averaged 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. Doncic became the youngest player in NBA history to average that stat line.

Since 2000, only Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden have produced at least 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. Joining that group before he is legally old enough to drink alcohol in this country is an amazing achievement for Luka.

Doncic will be tasked with being the face of the franchise after the retirement of Dirk Nowitzki. The Slovenian appears headed toward superstar status, but filling Dirk’s shoes will be a difficult task.

Perhaps Luka is angling for a run for mayor once his basketball career is over. In all seriousness, Doncic has adopted Dallas as his home, and that is fantastic to see. The rookie should be the face of the Mavs for the next decade-plus. It should be an exciting future.
