The Dallas Mavericks season is coming to an end and perhaps the biggest summer in franchise history is getting ready to heat up. What subtractions will the Mavs have to make to make this summer a success?

This summer is going to be an interesting one for the Dallas Mavericks. Between ample cap space, a bevy of solid free agents and a pair of stars that will garner some serious interest from the top players in the league, the Mavs are in a uniquely optimistic position going into this summer’s free agency period.

Part of the reason the Mavs will have so much cap space this summer is that most of the roster is no longer under contract after this season. Dallas has opened up a spot for a potential max contract to join Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis to push the Mavericks back into the playoff picture going forward.

Some players that fans really like will probably be gone this summer. Others will be on the fence on whether the Mavs front office wants to roll the dice once again or part with some guys that could be very meaningful to the franchise. In the end, it is tough to treat any other player like Dirk Nowitzki, because no one has done what Dirk has done for the franchise or really any franchise.

The truth is, I am of the belief that franchises need to be loyal to players in order to earn loyalty back from those players and their teammates. When you do something that is viewed as harsh to a player, other guys in the locker room will take notice. The Mavs have been particularly good at avoiding that situation, even in some cases like the one with Devin Harris last year.

For the sake of discussion, I have broken down the entire Mavs roster into four different classifications: Here to stay, likely returning, up in the air and most likely gone. Here is how I see it.
