Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki was honored at every turn by the crowd in Brooklyn as the Mavs took on the Nets on March 4.
Dallas Mavericks icon and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki may be retiring at season’s end. The German has not made a declaration, but opposing teams are taking the chance to honor Dirk either way.
The Mavs traveled to Brooklyn to take on the Nets on Monday evening. The game did not go the way they planned as the Nets won virtually every second of the contest in route to a 127-88 victory.
The Brooklyn fans did it right too. Starting in pregame warmups they honored Dirk the entire evening. The cheer during the announcement of the starters was so loud that fans missed who the other Mavericks four players were on the court. It did not stop there, though. They continued to get loud until Coach Carlisle took him out for the final time in the fourth quarter.
Tim Cato shared the following Tweet that epitomizes the feelings of most Mavs fans on Monday evening.
Supporters from across the league will continue to wonder if Dirk Nowitzki will actually hang up the shoes after this season. He is playing and moving better in recent games. Dirk appears to be having fun again, and the Mavericks should be headed toward contention with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis in the lineup. That could be enough to convince Nowitzki to play one more year.
Final thoughts
The Brooklyn fans showed massive love and respect to Dallas Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk turns 41 in June but still may have the sweetest stroke in the NBA.
Watching him play is a thing of beauty even in the final stages of his career. Fans should treasure it in the Mavs final 19 games. Local supporters should head to American Airlines Center for one of the final nine home tilts this season. It could be your last chance to see Dirk in a Mavericks uniform. That is not something to miss out on.
