The Dallas Mavericks made a blockbuster trade to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks on Jan. 31. Here is a grade for that move.
The Dallas Mavericks surprised everyone with a massive trade that came out of nowhere on Thursday afternoon. Fans expected the Mavs to make a move before the deadline especially with Dennis Smith Jr’s reported unhappiness, but nobody saw this coming.
It is no secret that the Mavericks are looking to build the team around Luka Doncic. The rookie has proven to be special and thrives with the ball in his hands. Luka needs to be the Mavs primary initiator.
The organization needs to put a roster around him that leads Dallas to contention. That group should include plenty of shooting. Doncic has a fantastic floater and the ability to get to any spot on the court. He also has the vision to find every open man. Putting shot-makers around him is part of the Mavericks path to contention.
Luka also needs a deadly roll man to be most effective. He is a fantastic pick-and-roll ball handler, but he needs a roll man that can both dive to the rim and nail a jumper.
The front office also needs to find players that are going to fit well in Coach Carlisle’s defensive scheme. That includes plenty of perimeter defenders around Luka and a big man capable of protecting the rim.
Keeping that in mind, let us take an in-depth look at their recent trade in order to produce a grade for the move.
