Dallas Mavericks forward Dwight Powell set a new career-high by dropping 24 points against the Clippers on Feb. 25 in Los Angeles.
The Dallas Mavericks went to Los Angeles for a showdown with the Clippers on Monday night. The game had plenty of storylines. Luka Doncic returned from injury and dropped a triple-double. Dirk Nowitzki started and was honored by Clipper coach Doc Rivers late in the game. The Mavs ultimately lost 121-112 on Feb. 25, but it was an eventful evening.
Lost in all of that was the stellar performance from Dwight Powell. He set a new career-high with 24 points. Powell also produced eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, two 3-pointers made, and two blocks in 37 minutes of action. He was ten of 11 from the field and made both of his free throws.
Powell also produced his share of highlight reel plays against the Clippers. Here is him finishing off an alley-oop from Luka courtesy of the Mavs official Twitter.
Here is a look at the bucket that pushed him over 20 points on the evening from the Mavericks Twitter.
Becoming a trend
That marks two 20-point performances in the Dallas Mavericks last three games from Dwight Powell. Since Feb. 10, Powell is playing 28.8 minutes per game and averaging 14.5 points a night. He is getting more touches and shot attempts after the Mavs made some moves at the trade deadline.
Powell’s player option at the end of the season has been discussed at length. He is showing improvements that make him worth every penny of his $10.26 million next season. Powell’s ability to attack the basket as a roll man fits well with Doncic. The Mavericks have a difficult decision on their hands when it comes to retaining the services of Dwight Powell this summer.
Final thoughts
Dallas Mavericks big man Dwight Powell set a new career-high by dropping 24 points against the Clippers on Monday evening. The performance is part of a recent trend of improved play from 27-year-old Canadian.
Keep an eye on Powell when the Mavs host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday evening. The Pacers employ one of the best big man groups in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how Powell fares against them. He will be looking for his third 20-point performance this season.
