The Dallas Mavericks faced off against the Utah Jazz in an early game tonight. Dallas fought hard against the excellent Jazz team, but eventually lost 113-104.

Despite a pretty solid game from the Dallas Mavericks tonight, it wasn’t enough to take down the Utah Jazz, a likely top-tier playoff team this season. Dallas eventually fell in a final score of 113-104.

Dennis Smith Jr. finally had his first big game of the season, scoring 27 points on 12-19 shooting from the field. He also shot 3-4 from three-point and blocked two shots. His rebounding and assist numbers could use some help, but we are just glad to see him getting back to his potential.

DeAndre Jordan may have been the real star of the show as he was only one assist away from a triple-double. He finished his game with 12 points, 19 rebounds and 9 assists. Other Mavs in double-digits include Wesley Matthews, Luka Doncic and Maxi Kleber.

The Jazz were led by Rudy Gobert with 23 and Donovan Mitchell with 20. Gobert also snagged 16 rebounds.

Here are three reasons the Mavs lost against the Jazz tonight.

Three-point shooting

The Mavs three point shooting wasn’t just an issue tonight, it has been a big issue the whole season. Dallas fires up a ton of three-point shots over and over in all their games. In fact, tonight, the Mavs only shot 28 threes which is significantly lower than their season average so far this year.

Even though they brought the number of attempts down, it still didn’t really help considering the Mavs only made 9 of them. 32% from three point is not going to cut it for the Mavs if they are going to keep competing with the other teams in the league.

Utah was not much better in their three-point shooting, but if Dallas wants to continue to lead the league in three-point attempts, they need to get our of the gutter on three-point percentage. More spot up threes and fewer off-the-dribble, step-back shots will definitely improve the percentage.
