The Dallas Mavericks saw one of their players honored with a prestigious award on Sept. 6.  Backup point guard J.J. Barea received the Mannie Jackson Human Spirit Award at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.

The award is given to the people in basketball who are dedicated to community service and helping others.  Barea earned the honor for his massive contributions to his native Puerto Rico after the devastating hurricane.  Three people earn the award every year.  Joining Barea were Tina Charles and Boris Diaw.

Congratulations go out to J.J. Barea for receiving the honor.  All the work he has done for those in Puerto Rico has made a significant impact, so props for that too.

What to expect on the court

Barea figures to play his usual role for the Mavs this season.  Expect him to log around 23 minutes per game and be the man in the second unit handling the ball.  The addition of Luka Doncic could impact Barea’s touches slightly, but Doncic will be comfortable playing off the ball too.

Must Read. 5 Mavs most likely to be traded this season

Barea set a career-high with 6.3 assists per game last season.  At age 34, expect to see the number slide down a little this season.  Barea should average around five dimes but should have plenty of talented offensive players around him on the court this season.  He should produce some excitement for Mavericks fans this season.

Final thoughts
