Only three players who played in the NBA in the 1990’s remain active, and it turns out they all played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2012.

Things change fast in the NBA.  Players move from team to team and the balance of power shifts quickly.

Think about how different the league was in 1999.  Gregg Popovich had just won his first NBA title, and his Spurs beat the Knicks in the finals coached by Jeff Van Gundy (yes, the now broadcaster).  LeBron James was in the eighth grade, and Kobe Bryant was a 20-year-old who was about to average 20 points per game for the first time.

A lot has happened since then, but three players who saw action in the 90’s remain active, according to ESPN.  The three players are Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter, and Jason Terry.  Each man was a member of the Dallas Mavericks for at least part of their career.  Let us take a closer look at each.

The legend

Dirk Nowitzki is the best player in the Mavericks franchise history.  He is entering his 21st consecutive season with the team and could vault into the top-five on the all-time scoring list this season.  Fans know plenty about Dirk and his greatness.

Vince Carter

Carter was long past his Vinsanity days when he joined the Mavs just after winning their NBA title in 2011.  He was a member of the Mavs for three seasons.  Carter joined Dallas at 35 years old.  He produced well off the bench including shooting 39.2 percent on 3-pointers during those three years.

Carter is now the oldest active player in the NBA and signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks.  Most consider this to be his final NBA season.

Jason Terry

The Jet played eight seasons for the Mavs including being the sixth man and critical contributor to their championship run in 2011.  He joined Dallas in 2004 and departed in 2012.  Jason Terry was a scorer off the bench that became a bit of a fan favorite.

He is hoping to play in the NBA in the coming season but remains unsigned as of this writing.

All three played on the same team

Nowitzki, Carter, and Terry were all members of the Dallas Mavericks for the 2011-2012 season.  The team finished 36-30 that season and was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs.

Final thoughts

Playing for the Dallas Mavericks must be good luck because the only three active players from the 90’s were all members of the team.  Nowitzki and Carter are future Hall of Famers.  Jason Terry has paved himself an impressive career.  Hopefully, The Jet finds a home this season and continues to produce.
