Marc J. Spears reported that the Dallas Mavericks are rumored to be interested in signing free agent guard Mario Chalmers for the upcoming season.

NBA Rumors are always making the rounds especially during the offseason.  The Dallas Mavericks got back into the mill on Aug. 7.  The Mavs are said to be looking into signing veteran combo guard Mario Chalmers.

Below is a Tweet from Marc J. Spears breaking the rumor.

Why Chalmers?

Mario Chalmers is a proven combo guard.  The 32-year-old can play both spots in the backcourt, handle the ball, can be a secondary or tertiary playmaker, and has always produced strong steal numbers.

Chalmers missed the entire 2016-2017 season after tearing his Achilles and his numbers suffered last season as a result.  He shot poorly from both the field (37.9 percent) and on 3-pointers (27.7 percent).  Chalmers may never fully recover from that injury especially considering his age.

Is there room?

The Mavs appear to have 15 guaranteed contracts locked in, but the team can still add players.  They have 20 training camp roster spots available to them and the mid-level exception of nearly $5 million to add veterans.  If Dallas signs another player to a guaranteed contract, they would have to cut one of the 16 (or more) before the regular season opener.

A wise move?

The addition of Mario Chalmers does not seem wise for the Mavericks.  Chalmers is best as a bench combo guard who plays around 20 minutes per game.  Dallas has J.J. Barea and Devin Harris who are both superior options.

That goes without mentioning that Chalmers rated with a negative value over replacement player (VORP) last season and had a win shares per 48 minutes of 0.021 (0.100 is league average).  He did not play well last season.

Adding Mario Chalmers to the Mavericks rosters appears to be a mistake at this time.

Final thoughts

Marc J. Spears is reporting that the Dallas Mavericks have interest in signing veteran guard Mario Chalmers.  Chalmers has two rings and over a decade of NBA experience, but he does not appear to be a fit on the Mavs roster.  Stay tuned to see if anything comes of this NBA rumor or not.
