The Dallas Mavericks brought back combo guard Devin Harris on a one-year deal on July 26, and we evaluate that transaction.

The Dallas Mavericks continue to round out their roster as training camp approaches.  On July 26, the team decided to bring back a familiar face to Mavs fans in guard Devin Harris.  Harris signed a veteran minimum one-year deal for the coming season according to Shams Charania.

That signing leaves Dallas with only one two-way contract available plus a few training camp invites they can handout.  With that said, let us grade the Harris transaction.

Devin Harris signing grade: B-

Fans can view the signing of Harris in a lot of different ways for Dallas.

First, the advanced metrics rated Harris well last season.  Assuming his production does not fall off a cliff at age 35, he figures to be worthy of minutes next season.

Also, the one-year deal allows the Mavs to maintain their flexibility next summer.  Dallas has just four players under guaranteed contract for the 2019-2020 season.  Harrison Barnes and Dwight Powell do have player options, though.  Expect Dallas to be hunting for a high-end free agent, and that requires significant cap space.

Third, the Mavericks decided on signing a 35-year-old instead of targeting a younger player who could have developed into a future piece.  They desire to make the playoffs this season, so perhaps targeting Harris was a wise strategy to accomplish that goal.

Lastly, Devin Harris does not fill Dallas’ most significant need.  They need another wing capable of playing the two and three.  A player who is capable of defending and/or stretching the floor off the bench.  David Nwaba and Patrick McCaw both would have been superior targets.

The Harris signing earned a B-minus grade because he should not hurt the team this season, but other free agents better filled their roster needs.

Final thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks signed Devin Harris to a veteran minimum one-year deal.  He should provide another guard option off the bench for Dallas.

It will be interesting to see how much playing time he receives.  The Mavs have a deep backcourt with plenty of options to mix and match with this season.  Harris should be solid yet unspectacular in the playing time he earns.  Stay tuned to see just how much that actually turns out to be this regular season.
