The Dallas Mavericks are expected to sign undrafted rookie Daryl Macon to a training camp invite deal where he will compete for a spot on their roster.

The Dallas Mavericks are still working hard to round out their roster for the coming season.  The team is making deals each day in hopes of fielding a talented squad that can compete for a playoff spot come opening night.

The Mavs agreed to a deal with undrafted rookie Daryl Macon on July 25 according to Hoops Rumors.  The contract is reportedly non-guaranteed making it a training camp invite only.  Macon will need to move ahead of a player like Dorian Finney-Smith to make Dallas’ regular season roster.

Background information on Macon

Daryl Macon is a 22-year-old who played two seasons of college basketball at Arkansas.  Last season, he averaged 16.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.0 steal, 2.4 3-pointers made, and 1.8 turnovers per game in 30.9 minutes a night.  Macon shot 44.7 percent from the field, 42.1 percent on 3-pointers, and 87.5 percent from the foul line.

He also played seven summer league games this offseason for the Miami Heat after going undrafted.  Macon averaged 7.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 0.7 steals, 1.3 3-pointers made, and 2.6 turnovers per game in 22.4 minutes a night.  Do not read too much into any of those stats as it is a small sample size.

What he brings to Dallas

Macon could catch on with the Mavs because he brings a skill set the team is lacking.  At 6’3 and 185 pounds, he is a combo guard.  Dallas has plenty of guards battling for minutes, but Macon’s 3-point shooting ability could separate him from the group.  The Mavs could be searching for floor spacers off the bench and Macon fits that mold.

The team will want him to stay and play for the Texas Legends even if he does not earn a regular season contract.

Final thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks are bringing in Daryl Macon on a non-guaranteed deal for this season.  The rookie will have the opportunity to prove himself this preseason, and he figures to have a spot on with the Mavericks G-League affiliate regardless.

Keep an eye on Macon during training camp and preseason.  He was a sought-after prospect for a reason, and he may make the Dallas Mavericks’ opening night roster.
