NBA Rumors suggest that the Dallas Mavericks are targeting Devin Harris to fill their final roster spot for the coming season.

NBA Rumors are one of the things that makes the offseason so exciting.  Fans never know what is going to pop up or what surprising trade/signing is up for discussion.  The Dallas Mavericks popped up in the rumor mill on July 23.

The Mavs made a two actual signing on Monday and a trade, but the rumor may be most interesting to fans.  They thought they had their 15 man roster filled until Yogi Ferrell backed out of his contract and signed with the Sacramento Kings.  Now, the Mavs have a new target to fill that roster spot.

Below is a Tweet from Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News with the first report on the rumor.

Familiar face

Devin Harris is no stranger to playing with the Dallas Mavericks.  Harris spent the previous four and half seasons in Dallas before a mid-season trade sent him to Denver last campaign.  Mavs fans know him well.

Harris has rated as nearly a league average player each of the last five seasons according to win shares per 48 minutes and over a replacement level player according to VORP, but he lacks the excitement of other potential signings.

Harris is a respected veteran who can do a job, but he is a combo guard.  The Mavs have their most significant need on the wing.  It would be better to sign a player who is capable of playing the three at least in spurts.

Final thoughts

NBA Rumors say the Dallas Mavericks are targeting a reunion with combo guard Devin Harris.  Harris is 35 years old with 14 seasons of NBA experience under his belt, so the Mavs and their fans know what to expect from him.

Stay tuned to see if the signing happens in the coming days or if the Dallas front office goes in a different direction to fill their final roster space.  It will definitely be worth monitoring as training camp approaches.
